A timing belt is a high-strength corded rubber belt that is located along one side of your Audi's engine to keep the crank and camshafts timed properly. The timing belt keeps the top half of the engine (the cylinder head and valves) in synch with the bottom half (the crankcase, and pistons). If the timing belt breaks, sever mechanical damage can occur. Usually, the damage involves the pistons hitting open valves, and in extreme cases, the engine may need to be replaced.
